Descrição Do Trabalho

What You'll Do

Join a backend team that powers Avalara's reporting and APIs on a globally distributed, 24/7 platform serving customers worldwide.

In your first 12 months, success means scalable, hardened services with clear SLOs, region-aware observability, and measurable improvements in latency and reliability across regions.

You'll own projects end to end—design, build, deploy, operate—modernizing pragmatically while strengthening API contracts and correctness in a regulated domain.

You'll help make tax compliance dependable at global scale;

What Your Responsibilities Will Be
Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs that power global reporting, with a focus on reliability, performance, and data correctness.

Own features end to end: write and review code, add tests, ship via CI/CD, and monitor production using metrics, logs, and traces to meet SLOs.

Work daily with product and adjacent engineering to break work into sprint-sized increments, refine API contracts, and deliver improvements to latency, scalability, and usability.

Participate in on-call, triage incidents with runbooks, and drive follow-ups that prevent repeats while keeping security and compliance requirements front and center.

What You'll Need To Be Successful

  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and operating production backend services/APIs end to end (deploy, monitor, on call) with defined SLOs for a 24/7, globally distributed platform.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern backend language and relational databases; able to model data, write efficient queries, and tune performance.
  • Hands-on with cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD, and observability (metrics, logs, traces) to diagnose issues and improve latency and reliability.
  • Proven ability to reduce technical debt and evolve legacy components incrementally without disrupting customers.
  • Security- and compliance-minded development (authn/z, PII handling, auditability, secure coding) aligned to regulated domains.
  • Clear written/verbal communication: concise docs/ADRs, effective code reviews, and collaborative delivery in two-week sprints.
