Description
Our Modeling team offers recent graduates excellent experience and development opportunities through an extensive training program with high-impact projects.
Based in São Paulo, you will contribute to our energy modelling efforts by developing analytical and computational tools, enhancing our modeling methodology, analysing data, formulating recommendations on future trends, and conveying insights to enhance clients’ decision making. The positions have a focus on modeling energy commodities (notably electricity) markets and suit a recent university graduate (MSc or PhD).
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Aurora’s suite of energy market models
- Work closely with our research and consulting teams to derive insights from model results
- Contribute to continuously improving how the modeling team operates
What We Look For
Required attributes:
- Relevant degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or other quantitative field from a top university
- Exceptional problem solving skills and analytical ability
- Ability to collect, analyse and interpret complex quantitative data and information
- Knowledge of one programming language, e.g. C++, Matlab, Python, R, Java
- Strong interpersonal skills, and a great team player
- Proficiency in English (C1 level)
- Written and spoken fluency in Portuguese (C2 level)
Desirable attributes:
- Relevant Master’s degree or PhD
- Knowledge of and interest in energy markets, and a belief that well-designed models significantly improve decision-making
- Knowledge of statistical and/or optimization techniques
- Knowledge of an algebraic modelling language, such as GAMS (preferred) or AMPL

Overview
Junior Software Developer – Digital Twin & Simulation Systems role at Moffatt & Nichol. FlexTerm Group runs digital versions of real companies to perform simulations, emulations and real time mirroring of their operations. It is a real-time 3D digital twin platform where complex logistics systems are studied, designed, optimized, developed, and tested before being deployed into production. It allows to model any kind of system; however, it is mostly applied to highly automated facilities such as ports, container terminals, automated warehouses, manufacturing plants, etc.
Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. This role is based in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro offices as part of the FlexTerm Group. As a Junior Software Developer and Modeler you will work closely with engineers to build simulation and emulation models for analysis of various systems and processes within container terminals and other facilities, run models, collect outputs, perform studies, and write technical reports.
Responsibilities- Craft highly effective C++ code to develop and maintain the applications in the FlexTerm platform.
- Write unit and integration tests for new and existing functionality.
- Excel with agile development methodologies.
- Write technical documentation in the team’s wiki site in Confluence.
- Deliver FlexTerm solutions to clients world-wide.
- Develop simulation, emulation and digital twin models using the FlexTerm platform. Includes: modeling real world equipment and devices, writing behavior logic in Lua, defining and exporting metrics, generating real time BI dashboards, running, debugging and validating models.
- Deploy and integrate the FlexTerm solution with other systems into the client’s IT environment.
- Documenting modeling assumptions, process flows, results, and issuing reports.
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Math or related discipline (Electrical/Electronics/Computer Engineering, Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering with emphasis in Robotics).
- Proven education or experience in computer programming, data structures and algorithms.
- Fluent in a C-like programming language such as C, C++, C#, Objective-C, Swift, Lua, Java, Javascript.
- Desired experience in:
- 3D computer graphics and animation
- AI/ML development
- CADD/GIS and 3D graphics modeling capabilities
- Low level 3D/VR libraries such as OpenGL, GLSL, Vulkan, OpenSceneGraph, PhysX.
- GUI frameworks such as Qt.
- AI/ML frameworks such as Torch, TensorFlow, OpenCV.
- OS scripting languages such as MS-DOS batch, Sh and Powershell.
- Working with multiple exchange formats like XML, JSON, Protobuf.
- Working with version control systems such as Git, Gitlab and SourceTree.
- Working with CAD, GIS and 3D modeling packages such as AutoCAD, Blender and OpenGIS/ArcGIS.
- Any experience in discrete event simulation modeling is preferred.
- Experience in software development life cycle is a plus but not required.
- Experience in port and container terminal operations is a plus.
- All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171.
Work is generally performed in a hybrid schedule. Ability to use standard office equipment is required. Travel might be required.
